The UCSF Orthopaedic Surgery Department is seeking a highly motivated Postdoctoral Research Fellow in Dr. Jeannie Bailey’s Digital Orthopaedic Biomechanics research group. Dr. Bailey’s research focuses on 1) understanding mechanistic relationships between muscle health and biomechanical function in orthopaedic patient populations, 2) developing digital technology for remote motion assessments, and 3) tracking and predicting post-treatment recovery trajectories. We are looking for a person with a broad appreciation for data science and a creative mindset. This role will involve 1) working with our research mobile app that we use to capture video for in-clinic and remote biomechanical assessments, and 2) developing projects using multi-domain smartwatch data to characterize response to treatment, as well as predicting future pain episodes in MSK patients.
We are looking for an individual who is not afraid to collect data in a motion analysis lab, but also keen on honing skills in mobile app development for remote motion capture. There will be elements of novel algorithm development and multi-domain trajectory analyses. This project involves a motivated person interested in understanding the complexities of effective biomechanical recovery with response to treatment for chronic MSK conditions. Our research team involves surgeons, physical therapists, mechanical engineers, bioengineers, biostatisticians, and diverse data scientists.
Ph.D. in mechanical engineering, bioengineering, kinesiology, or a related field
Experience with motion analysis data
Experience with data management and creating data analysis pipelines
Data science and biostatistical skills, as well as enjoying the pursuit of problem solving
Good communication and organization
Able to code in Python, R, and MATLAB
Works well with team members with diverse skillsets
The Department of Orthopaedic Surgery will provide the highest quality of patient care, conduct innovative clinical, basic science, and translational research, and train the next generation of global leaders in orthopaedic surgery.
The UCSF Department of Orthopaedic Surgery runs a comprehensive research program including basic science, biomechanics, clinical, policy and global health research. The collective goal of our orthopaedic investigators is to improve the care of patients with musculoskeletal conditions in the broadest sense.
