The Department of Clinical Sciences at Cummings School of Veterinary Medicine at Tufts University invites applications for an assistant or associate professor of zoological companion animal medicine (ZCAM) to join our current full-time faculty member. In addition to supporting the ZCAM clinical service in the Foster Hospital for Small Animals, the position is responsible for the teaching of DVM students in the pre-clinical program and in clinical rotations. Engagement in research and scholarly activity is expected, dependent on the interests of the candidate. Appointments are available in continuous-term or clinical track faculty positions. Clinical commitment is 26 – 35 weeks per year, depending on the track.

This is an exciting opportunity to be part of a highly valued ZCAM program in an academic veterinary hospital with a caseload of nearly 35,000 animals per year. The ZCAM service has a robust clinical caseload, including companion animals and animals from local zoos and aquaria. The ZCAM service offers endoscopy and minimally invasive procedures. Collaborative opportunities with the Tufts Wildlife Clinic also exist.  The service provides excellent student teaching and offers an ACZM residency training program.

The FHSA has a full range of specialties that include diagnostic imaging, anesthesiology, emergency and critical care, internal medicine, neurology, cardiology, dermatology, oncology, and ophthalmology. The emergency and critical care service provides 24 hour/7 day a week service and is certified as a Level 1 Trauma Center. Additional features of the Foster Small Animal Hospital 3.0T MRI, helical multi-slice CT, fully equipped nuclear medicine suite, C-arm fluoroscopy, portable radiography, laparoscopy/arthroscopy, interventional radiology suite, and Varian linear accelerator with cone beam CT, a multi-leaf collimator and stereotactic radiotherapy.

Cummings School has research strengths in clinical and translational research, supported by a clinical trials office. Areas of strength include musculoskeletal disease, cardiovascular disease, comparative oncology, urology, and others. There are many opportunities to develop independent or collaborative research projects with faculty on this campus or with researchers on other Tufts campuses and within the New England medical community. All scholarly activity is valued in the school's promotions process and the expectations are dependent on the appointment track and assigned time.

Requirements include a DVM degree or its equivalent and completion of a formal residency program in zoological companion (exotic) animal medicine. Board certification by the ACZM at or no later than two years following the date of hire is required. Demonstrated interest and aptitude in teaching is required. Ability and interest in engaging in independent or collaborative research and scholarly activity is expected, with expectations dependent on the interests and qualifications of the candidate. The rank and appointment track will be dependent on experience, interests, and qualifications of the candidate. Continuous-term track appointments are available for those with appropriate qualifications in research and scholarly activity, while clinical track appointments are for those who are primarily interested in clinical activity and teaching.
