We are seeking a driven, motivated, organized, and eager to learn lab manager to join our team in the department of orthopaedic surgery at the Massachusetts General Hospital Charlestown Navy Yard Research Lab starting Fall 2023. You will be the lab manager for the bioskills lab. This will require you to be in charge of the purchasing and storage of all lab materials including surgical instruments, PPE, and cadaveric specimens. You will also be setting up, running, and cleaning up for the labs. The lab is used by medical students, orthopedics surgical residents, fellows, and attendings from this institution as well as outside entities.
In this position, you will play a key role in monitoring ongoing clinical trials and retrospective clinical outcomes studies to ensure compliance with procedures and protocols. You will be involved in conducting clinical research and collecting outcomes both prospectively and retrospectively. You will be in the bioskills/biomechanics labs to coordinate ongoing research and maintain the lab space. Occasionally you may be asked to video a procedure in a surrounding OR.
Principal Duties and Responsibilities:
Bioskills/Resident Education
Film OR cases for educational presentations and videos
Manage the purchasing of cadaveric specimens and lab supplies
Manage storage and inventory of the cadaveric specimens
Thaw the specimen and setup for bioskills labs
Maintain and trouble shoot equipment with assistance from industry
Understand the needs of the procedure and setup x-ray or arthroscopy if needed
Work with industry representatives to insure the lab is equipped with necessary instrumentation for the lab
Coordinate with industry representatives and attending physicians to ensure that the lab runs smoothly
Order and maintain personal protective equipment in the lab
Maintain and clean the lab on a regular basis
Keep an organized lab schedule
Maintain surgical equipment and troubleshoot malfunctioning equipment
Coordinate the removal of old and broken equipment
Coordinate human tissue waste removal
Monitor clinical trials
Ensure compliance with all clinical trial protocols
Enter clinical research data into appropriate fields
Transfer data from paper formats via computer, recorders, or scanners
Organize spreadsheets with large numbers
Curate data directly from clinical research
Oversee clinical site activities
Prepare correspondence, documentation, or presentation materials on findings
Draft informed consents for trials
Submit/facilitate the submission of study applications for approval by our Institutional Review Board (IRB)
Perform self-audits of research trials
Clinical Outcomes
Collect subjective clinical outcomes
Record range of motion for all patients at yearly follow-up visits
Create educational PowerPoints to show case reports or surgical techniques
Biomechanical Testing
Perform cadaveric dissections and prepare specimens for biomechanical testing
Creating biomechanical testing fixtures and procedures
Data collection and motion analysis of biomechanical testing
Qualifications Skills/Abilities Required:
Proficient computer skills, including Microsoft Office Suite, and Adobe Premiere Pro or other similar video editing software
Self-directed and able to work without supervision
Excellent written and verbal communication skills
Ability to multitask, prioritize, and manage time efficiently
Preferred to have some type of mechanical inclination
Education:
Required Bachelor's Degree in Science, Psychology, or related field
Experience:
Minimum 3 years research experience in related health care field preferred
