Department Overview
The OHSU Knight Cancer Institute is a pioneer in personalized cancer treatment and research, led by Dr. Brian Druker, whose development of Gleevec transformed Chronic Myeloid Leukemia from a fatal disease to a manageable one and proved that targeted therapies can work. The institute focuses on precision oncology, the early detection, prevention, and treatment of cancer, and creating a welcoming and supportive environment for its caregivers, researchers, and support personnel. Knight affiliates subscribe to three guiding principles: we are bold, we are supportive, and we work as a connected team in our fight to end cancer as we know it. We?d love for you to join us!
Every Knight Cancer employee is expected to embody our guiding principles:
- We act BOLDLY--Breakthroughs require pushing the boundaries of science, exploring new frontiers, and thinking differently
- We SUPPORT each other--Respect leads to trust, which leads to excellence
- We work as a CONNECTED team -- We must leverage our collective brain power to conquer cancer because no one individual can do it alone
Function/Duties of Position
The position is for a post-doctoral researcher to work on a NIH funded R21 study under the direction of Co-Principal Investigators, Dr. Kerri Winters-Stone and Dr. Jeffrey Kaye. Dr. Winters-Stone's laboratory is focused on improving the health and well-being of cancer survivors, with a particularly emphasis on exercise rehabilitation. The lab uses both observational and interventional approaches to identify cancer treatment related toxicities, with a focus on musculoskeletal health, that drives development and testing of prescriptive exercise programs to improve long term outcomes, such as fall avoidance and survival. Dr Kaye's research focus is to advance methods to sustain healthy aging and with a focus on chronic disease. Dr. Kaye has extensive experience in team-building, designing, conducting and analyzing studies of aging and neurodegenerative diseases across a wide spectrum of environments (e.g., clinics, community residences, assisted living and nursing facilities, 'smart' homes), designs (e.g., program projects, longitudinal natural history studies, proof-of-concept studies, randomized controlled trials, online surveys), and approaches (e.g., cognitive and behavioral testing, genetics, neuroimaging, biomarkers, in-home continuous assessment technologies).
Dr. Winters-Stone and Dr. Kaye have teamed together to create the Pacific Aging & Cancer Studies Collaboratory that focuses on the use of technology to better understand the impact of cancer treatment on functioning and quality of life in people with cancer. We are a busy, high-energy, fast-paced team that is doing research to improve people's lives and change healthcare, thus, we seek a candidate with similar passions, drive and work ethic.
Functions/Duties of the position: This postdoctoral researcher will assist the Co-PI's with a new NIH grant to develop an infrastructure advancing the use of digital biomarkers and related technologies for research on functional aging and survivorship in cancer. The postdoc will be hired to help oversee and manage the R21 study activities that will culminate in a publication on the attitudes and behaviors of older cancer survivors toward digital technology in health care, development of best practices for engagement of older cancer survivors in digital health technologies, and finalization of a standardized protocol and procedures for a subsequent observational study. S/he will have a PhD in a health sciences field and a desire to pursuit a research career in cancer survivorship and aging. S/he will help assist with and run a community advisory board and community engagement study under the direction of the Knight Community Outreach and Engagement program, will help design, run and analyze a survey study, assist with creation of videos, newsletters and other materials for recruitment, compliance and retention, and create a standardized protocol for subsequent research.
The researcher will assume oversight of the project including project management, oversight of training staff and data collection, participant recruitment and data analysis. S/he might also assist with other projects that focus on cancer and aging. In addition, the researcher will work directly with the PI to assist with data cleaning and analysis and write manuscripts and final reports and create scientific presentations. We are looking for an individual with substantial clinical research experience, academic training in health sciences including, but not limited to the following: exercise oncology, cancer survivorship, gerontology, rehabilitation science, neurology and/or technology (e.g., digital or mhealth), and demonstrated ability to produce scientific papers and presentations. This is an excellent opportunity to gain research experience and build a CV for a competitive academic position. PI's will provide mentorship in development of independent grant submissions.
