Assistant or Associate Professor of Veterinary Anesthesia and Analgesia

The Department of Clinical Sciences at Cummings School of Veterinary Medicine at Tufts University invites applications for an assistant or associate professor of veterinary anesthesia and analgesia. This is a continuous-term (tenure-equivalent) faculty position, with an expectation for significant research activity, clinical activity, and teaching. The successful candidate will be expected to sustain an independent or collaborative research program, to contribute to pre-clinical and clinical teaching in the DVM program, to mentor residents, and to provide anesthesiology support in the Foster Hospital for Small Animals (FHSA) and the Hospital for Large Animals (HLA).
The FHSA and HLA are fully equipped multi-specialty teaching hospitals, offering referral services and 24/7 emergency care. The FHSA caseload is primarily dogs, cats, and exotic species, with approximately 35,000 cases per year. The HLA caseload is primarily equine, with 15% camelids and small ruminants, with approximately 2,000 cases per year. There is also an occasional opportunity to anesthetize animals at surrounding zoos and animal parks. We pride ourselves on working well with all sections of the hospitals and therefore we seek a team member with a collaborative spirit.
The anesthesia section currently has three faculty with ACVAA Diplomate status, three residents, one intern and 10 highly skilled anesthesia technicians. We are seeking to return to five faculty members. We have both Mallard and Tafonius large animal ventilators, a new MRI-compatible Phillips Invivo monitor, and a Sonosite Edge II ultrasound to facilitate local blocks. We strive to ensure our patients are medically optimized before they come to us and help facilitate continuity of care between services. In addition to hiring additional anesthesia faculty, we are looking to add advanced level nursing positions to help manage patient care in the perioperative period. Cummings School has research strengths in clinical and translational research, supported by a Clinical Trials Office. Areas of strength in Clinical Sciences include musculoskeletal disease, cardiovascular disease, comparative oncology, urology, and nutrition. There are many opportunities to develop independent or collaborative research projects with faculty on this campus or with researchers on other Tufts campuses and within the New England medical community. Additional unique resources at Cummings School include the Clinical Research Shared Resource, Comparative Pathology and Genomics Shared Resource, and the New England Regional Biosafety Laboratory. All types of research and scholarly activity are valued in the school's promotions process.
The position also emphasizes excellence in DVM student instruction and resident mentoring. Faculty are expected to assist with specialty board review sessions, journal club, and other aspects of resident training, including supervision of resident research projects.
The allocation of time ranges from 20 – 26 weeks for clinical activity, 12 – 20 weeks for research and scholarly activity, 4 – 8 weeks for classroom and laboratory teaching, and 3 – 6 weeks for administrative service, depending on the rank and interests of the candidate. Vacation and university time off is 5 weeks.
Requirements include a DVM degree or its equivalent and completion of an American College of Veterinary Anesthesia and Analgesia (ACVAA) and/or European College of Veterinary Anesthesia and Analgesia (ECVAA) residency. Board certification is required at, or no later than two-years following, the date of hire. An advanced degree (MSc or PhD, or equivalent) is considered an asset. Clinical excellence is expected. Demonstrated interest and aptitude in teaching is required. Candidates must have a demonstrated interest and ability in research and scholarly activity, at a level appropriate to rank and experience, and have a desire to continue an active independent or collaborative research program. Rank (assistant, associate) and salary are dependent on the qualifications and experience of the successful candidate.
