APP Nocturnist- Neurosurgery / Spine Service (Physician Assistant or Nurse Practitioner)

Brief Job Summary
The APP Nocturnist for the Neurosurgery/Spine Service cross-covers patients admitted to the neuro/spine service, conducts consults in the ED for urgent/emergent neurosurgical/spine consults, admits new patients to the neurosurgery/spine service, assists the attending neurosurgery/spine surgeon with bedside procedures and responds to ED/Inpatient units as needed to troubleshoot issues with external ventricular or lumbar drains, etc. Patient population primarily consists of postoperative patients with diagnosis of: spine pain management and surgery, SI joint fusion, Carotid endarterectomy, EC-IC bypass, Craniotomy, skill base lesions, MVD, Chiari decompression, Subdural, epidural hematoma, Intracranial hemorrhage, subarachnoid hemorrhage, hydrocephalus, shunt management, aneurysm, NPH, lumbar drain trials, CNS infection etiology and management.
Perform diagnostic and therapeutic procedures to assist physician in diagnosing medical and surgical problems.
Prescribing necessary treatment and services for quality patient care.
Record the normal and abnormal data for review by the physician.
Complete consults as needed.
Perform patient history assessments, conduct physical examinations, and record the data in the patient's record.
Write progress notes, prepare patient workups and summaries noting pertinent positive and negative findings.
Obtain psychosocial history relevant to patient care, and assume responsibility for developing therapeutic relationships with patients.
Order and schedule laboratory studies and diagnostic procedures; explain necessity, preparation, nature and anticipated effects of scheduled diagnostic and therapeutic procedures to the patient.
Carry out therapeutic procedures such as wound suturing and dressing change
Monitor progress of patients, report progress to supervising physician, and maintain record of each patient's progress, consulting with supervising physician when patient's progress does not meet anticipated and/or predetermined criteria.
Participate in basic science and clinical research projects conducted by supervising physician
Prepare statistical reports and analyses setting forth progress, adverse trends and appropriate recommendations or conclusions.
Participate in teaching students and residents in techniques and procedures which are unique to specific clinical setting.
Continue to keep LOS low and make available improvements, maintain patient safety and outcomes for NSU/Spine unit.
Educate staff, family and patients.
Other related duties as needed.
Minimum Qualifications to Apply
PA: Graduate of accredited Physician Assistant Master's Degree program
NP Graduate of accredited MSN or DNP Nurse Practitioner's Program to treat adults
PA: Unrestricted license issued by NCMB with authorization to practice as a Physician Assistant
NP: Unrestricted RN license issued by NCBON with authorization to practice as a Nurse Practitioner
NP: NP certification to treat adults, FNP, AGNP, ACNP, etc.
PA: Neurosurgery/Spine PA experience strongly preferred
RN: Neurosurgery/Spine NP experience strongly preferred, will consider RN with neurosurgery and/or ortho/spine experience
Full Time Nights; x3 - 12 hour shifts M-F; Weekends/Holidays as needed
