The Advanced Practice Provider Manager, Comprehensive Musculoskeletal Center (CMC) manages, directs, and coordinates the clinical advanced practice provider (APP)team, to include Physician Assistants (PA) and Advanced Practice Nurses (APRN)within the department of Orthopaedic Surgery and Physical Medicine Advanced Practice Teams.
Administrative Effort (50%): Administers overall operations of the clinical APP team to include clinical practice, staffing, staff development, strategic planning, quality assurance, and administration of activities and personnel that impact clinical operations.
Clinical Effort (50%): The APP Manager is an experienced clinical leader and provider with exceptional communication skills, who will provide care within their area of expertise.
• Administratively manages APP staff and operations and develops and administers policies and procedures.
• Responsible for operational and tactical planning, contributing to strategic plans, assessing related processes, implementing techniques to promote and improve the quality and continuity of patient care and evaluating aggregate data for the purpose of assessment.
• Develop and administer a strategic plan to manage APP activity.
• Ensure that appropriate personnel are in place by developing and managing a staffing plan for the APP team.
• Develop and monitor staff compliance with education and training requirements.
• Review and assess clinical needs and as required, proposes revision or creation of clinical services in both the planning and budgeting processes.
• Review billing activity of APPs for the purposes of compliance, distribution of effort and in comparison, to budgeted activity.
• Ensure APPs function in accordance with federal and state regulatory standards and institutional policies and procedures.
• Ensure appropriate alignment of APPs working towards goals established within the team, service, and department.
• Facilitate open channels of communication with members of the section/department faculty and administration.
• Schedule staff, Coordinate work for APPs in section/department including training and orientation. Resolve scheduling and possible cross coverage issues as they arise with individual APP's. Maintain a central schedule resource that includes paid time off and CME
• Plan, review, and manage the administrative and operational activities of the
section/department APPs related to efficiency, productivity, quality assurance, safety, and regulatory compliance.
• Lead the recruiting, interview, selection, and orientation process for section/department APP positions.
• Develop and revise job descriptions for APPs within the section/department.
• Conduct performance evaluation of APPs in partnership with physician. Nursing leadership is included for NP staff and PA leadership is included for PA staff
• Coach and mentor APPs with respect to opportunities for performance and professional growth. This includes distribution and collection of 360-degree feedback from faculty & APPs, individual chart reviews as required for ongoing professional evaluation or focused professional evaluation.
• Provide oversight, in partnership with physician leadership, for credentialing and privileging process including selection of privileges appropriate to role and competency assessment including logging of minimum procedures required for APP privileges.
• Provide feedback to the assigned physician(s) regarding performance issues as may apply to the APP individuals or team
• Conduct review of Section/department operational and process issues as the impact/affect APPs.
• Coordinate the development of section/department policies and procedures for APPs.
• Plan and direct educational activities for APPs within the section/department.
• Participate in quality/safety activities, facilitate, and conduct planning, coordinating, and evaluating section/department quality assurance and patient safety activities as they relate to APPs.
• Participate as clinical leader on the management team for designated section/department. Meet regularly with Section/department administration to determine the need for any position or department-specific or competency-based education or assessment of APPs, in addition to the required UMHS annual mandatories. If specific needs are determined, work with section/department administration to define and implement those assessments.
• Participate in and encourage activities among APPs to promote continued learning and professional growth.
• Advise with the development of a focused professional practice evaluation plan (FPPE)
• Act as central oversight for CME policy including review and approval of CME related expenses consistent with the policy within the section/department and any relevant contract.
• Identify opportunities and facilitate APP student experiences within section/department.
• Attend continuing education offerings and staff development programs, review literature, and collaborate with other professionals.
• Develop own performance plan consistent with the goals of the position. Evaluate own performance periodically with supervising physician and APP leadership.
• Provide direct patient care for a percentage of appointment appropriate for the team and approved by the section/department
• Manage and document APP performance concerns and escalate when necessary.
• Assist with the development of clinically relevant peer review and quality metrics. May assist with individual chart reviews as required for ongoing professional evaluation or focused professional evaluation.
• Partner with local physician leadership to optimize models of care resulting in top of license function, productivity, and efficiency.
This position requires moderate standing/walking, as well as lifting, positioning, pushing, and/or transferring of patients.
- Satisfactory completion of a physician assistant program accredited by the Accreditation Review Commission on Education for the Physician Assistant (ARC-PA) is necessary. Certification by the National Commission on Certification for Physician Assistants (NCCPA) is necessary. Possession of a current license to practice as a Physician Assistant in the State of Michigan is necessary. OR Graduate of an accredited Nurse Practitioner program is necessary. Current licensure to practice as a Registered Nurse and Nurse Practitioner specialty certification in the State of Michigan is necessary. Certification as a Nurse Practitioner in the appropriate specialty recognized by the National Council of State Boards of Nursing (NCSBN) is necessary.
- Five years recent APP clinical experience is necessary.
- One-year of recent healthcare leadership experience is necessary.
- In-depth knowledge of Advanced Practice Nurse and Physician Assistant work, state and federal regulations, and credentialing is necessary.
- Excellent interpersonal communication skills are necessary.
- In-depth knowledge of Advanced Practice Nurse and Physician Assistant work, state and federal regulations, and credentialing is necessary.
- This classification requires Primary Source Verification.
- Recent APP clinical experience in specialty relevant to practice is desired.
This is a 1.0 FTE, 40-hour position and includes off shifts, weekend and holiday shifts as required by the service.
Supervision Received
The APP Manager will have a primary reporting relationship to the Asociate Chief Clinical Officer/Department Chair/Medical Director for clinical operation issues. When on clinical duty, the APP Manager will receive direction from the assigned physician.
Supervision Exercised:
Administrative supervision is exercised over APPs working within the assigned unit.
This position is not included under the collective bargaining agreement between the U-M and the Michigan Nurses Association and the U-M Professional Nurse Council or the United Physician Assistants of Michigan Medicine unions.
