Position Summary
Position functions as an assistant to physician and staff in the application, maintenance, and removal of splints, casts, traction and other orthopaedic medical devices. Also monitors and orders casting and other medical appliances, including instruments. Cleans instruments and cast rooms as per Environmental Health and Safety regulations.

Job Description
Clinical office setting with some pressure caused by adherence to patient/physician schedule. May have to travel between offices. Lifting patients and equipment is a regular part of the job.
Primary Duties and Responsibilities
- Performs splinting, casting, and application of traction under the direction of an orthopedic physician or resident.
- Apply, adjust, measure, and educate patients on medical appliances and equipment.
- Remove casts with care.
- Performs direct and indirect patient care activities within the scope of practice of an orthopedic technologist, i.e. assisting with dressing changes, suture and staple removal, etc.
- Documents the care administered into electronic medical records.
- Orders and maintains clinical supplies.
- Maintains a professional demeanor and strict confidentiality as per HIPAA regulations.
- Obtains x-rays, prepares exam rooms and monitors physician schedules as necessary.
- Assists the Medical Assistants in clinical areas, by preparing charts, x-rays and exam rooms when necessary.
- Adjusts canes, walkers, crutches, and give ambulation instructions.
- Performs other tasks as assigned.
Preferred Qualifications
- One year orthopedic experience preferred with casting experience highly recommended.
- Communication skills with the ability to work with physicians, patients and support staff.
- Strong interpersonal, organizational and telephone skills.
- Familiar with keyboard to document care given.
- Strong knowledge of anatomy and physiology.
Required Qualifications
- High school diploma or equivalent high school certification and related work experience or training as an Orthopaedic Technologist, Medical Assistant, Cast Technician or Certified Athletic Trainer.
- Basic Life Support Certification, Level C, or obtains certification within one month of employment. Online BLS certifications, those without a skills assessment component, are not sufficient to meet the BLS requirements.

Salary Range
$15.30 - $21.37 / Hourly
The salary range reflects base salaries paid for positions in a given job grade across the University. Individual rates within the range will be determined by factors including one's qualifications and performance, equity with others in the department, market rates for positions within the same grade and department budget.
