The Eastside Specialty Center Shared Clinic has an outstanding opportunity for a full-time, day shift, MEDICAL ASSISTANT. UW Medical Center's Eastside Specialty Center (ESC) provides residents of Bellevue and neighboring communities excellent outpatient treatment, including minor procedures, from some of the region’s finest physicians. The Center provides care in the following practices: Cardiology Gastroenterology General surgery Urology Orthopaedics and Sports Medicine Rehabilitation Medicine Urogynecology Allergy Urgent care Vascular surgery Dermatology Others
The individual in this position will perform duties to assist our health care professionals in the examination and treatment of patients, including preparing the patient and the environment for treatment; meeting the communication needs of patients and family; conducting basic diagnostic tests; providing patient care coordination, providing patient education, and clerical/reception functions. Additionally, they will communicate with physicians and team members about patient’s clinical condition, including symptoms and results of diagnostic tests, as well as complete follow-up as directed by provider.
As a member of the health care team, the Medical Assistant helps to create a culture of professional excellence and helps to maintain an environment that respects cultural, economic, ethnic and lifestyle differences of patients and staff.
RESPONSIBILITIES Prepare patients for and assist health care professionals with the procedures Schedule routine and special procedures such as CT, MRI, chemotherapy and lumbar puncture Observe and document in the medical record the patient's physical and emotional condition and vital signs; recognize and report symptomology of common medical illnesses to physician or nurse Perform dressing changes and suture removal Perform basic laboratory examinations, venipuncture, and 12-lead electrocardiogram including rhythm strips Present portions of the pre- and post-procedure patient education sessions Monitor patient flow in clinic to assure efficient clinic operations Schedule new and return appointments Must be able to perform phlebotomy when needed. Our MAs cover the lab, as well as perform ECGs Must use EpicCare for documentation Use computer system to check patients in and out of clinics Complete billing documents verifying the correctness of charges and that diagnoses have been obtained Transport patients and lab specimens Order medical and clerical supplies and stock examination rooms Coordinate communication flow in the clinic including answering and directing telephone inquiries to the appropriate individual Provide basic telephone screening per clinic protocols and recognize emergent/urgent problems and direct to the nurse or physician Coordinate clerical patient care activities and/or specialized technical duties unique to the assigned clinic to ensure accurate and expedited patient check-in and discharge, including obtaining consents for care and referral information Take initiative to maintain patient flow for assigned providers/team Act promptly and effectively during an emergency situation Maintain/improve own professional competence, knowledge and skills to meet identified self-learning needs and annual review requirements Apply appropriate policies, procedures, protocols, and standards of practice in performing duties Support development of clinic and divisional efficiency and effectiveness through participation in quality assessment and improvement activities Demonstrate support for clinic and divisional policies and procedures Promote and contribute to the development of team in clinic and working relationships between the clinic and other departments/disciplines Perform related duties as required
REQUIREMENTS Completion of a Medical Assistant course accredited by the Commission on Accreditation of Allied Health Education Programs (CAAHEP) or Accrediting Bureau of Health Education Schools (ABHES) or other recognized regional or national accreditation board; OR equivalent education/experience.
LEGAL REQUIREMENT Must be Washington State Medical Assistant-Certified or achieve this designation during the probationary period. Failure to achieve and/or maintain this designation will result in termination of employment.
