The MSSIC Clinical Data Abstractor (CDA) is responsible for collecting, analyzing, and reporting clinical data elements for cases eligible for inclusion in the MSSIC data registry. The CDA’s chief responsibility is to collect and submit reliable data in a timely manner. The CDA is required to independently manage their case load and report data to MSSIC according to established standards and deadlines. This is accomplished through high-quality data compilation, validation, documentation, and entry into the MSSIC registry on all eligible patients. Through application of clinical knowledge and analysis of MSSIC registry date, the CDA is also required to identify opportunities for clinical quality improvement and other special projects as requested by the MSSIC Coordinating Center; the CDA will work collaboratively with fellow team members and with physicians, nurses, other clinicians and administrators to develop quality improvement strategies for spine surgery at Michigan Medicine.
Other responsibilities include but are not limited to: attending tri-annual consortium-wide meetings and data abstractor meetings as a representative of Michigan Medicine, acting as a resource regarding MSSIC within the U-M Departments of Neurosurgery and Orthopaedic Surgery, maintaining regular contact with Michigan Medicine’s MSSIC surgeon champions and clinical outcomes teams members, preparing for and being available for annual site audits by the MSSIC Coordinating Center, resolving data discrepancies, and responding to MSSIC Coordinating Center requests in a timely fashion.
This position requires experience in the delivery of patient care, ideally with spine patients. Other required skills include excellent written and verbal communication as well as working knowledge of computer software (Microsoft Word, Excel, and Access) and web-based applications. Prior experience with clinical chart review and abstraction is required. Employees in this role typically analyze, compare and evaluate various courses of action and have the authority to make independent decisions on matters of significance, free from immediate direction, within the scope of their responsibilities.
Bachelor’s degree in nursing, or bachelor’s degree in other health science plus Registered Nurse (RN) or Registered Health Information Technician (RHIT) certification
1-5 years of clinical experience in a patient care setting
3 years experience analyzing and interpreting processes of care and clinical outcomes
Previous experience with clinical chart review, data abstraction from medical records
Experience with Microsoft Word, Access, and Excel
Detail oriented with strong organizational, analytic, and problem solving skills
Exceptional verbal and written communications skills
Must be able to perform in a self-directed manner within a team-focused participative management framework
Evidence of ability to assess competing priorities, manage workflow and meet operational deadlines in a complex organization
• Familiarity with Michigan Medicine MiChart EMR system
• Clinical experience in spine patient care desired
• Knowledge of spine-related medical terminology preferred
• Database data entry and/or management experience preferred
• Quality improvement experience preferred
