This Research Assistant I will be responsible for: Under the direction of the Principal Investigator, the Research Assistant provides technical, scientific, and general operational support to research projects, which focus on imaging studies to investigate the normal and pathological development of joints and tissues using different imaging modalities, including MRI and CT scans. Specific activities/duties vary by the project but in general includes: research project planning and design, data acquisition, data processing/analysis, manuscript drafting and submission, and preparation of abstracts/posters/presentations. More specifically:
According to prescribed protocols and assigned schedules, perform a variety of imaging studies, utilizing standard laboratory/research equipment and software, recording and checking results for completeness and accuracy, and assists in troubleshooting procedures.
Use image segmentation techniques to generate 3D models from imaging data. Conduct 2D and 3D measurements to quantify different anatomical indices of the joints. Contribute to computational simulations (e.g. Finite Element Modeling, Statistical Shape Modeling) and analysis of simulation outputs.
Conduct literature searches and reviews, compiling information for journals and suggesting uses for new techniques to the P.I.
Contributes to the team within and between departments and organizations
Collaborate with other research staff and investigators to plan and design sound research methodologies and experiments
Assist with preparation of new project proposals and Institutional Review Board (IRB) protocol applications
Assist with patient or healthy volunteer recruitment and scheduling for Imaging Research studies
Coordinate research projects and manage the timing of several concurrent projects using project management skills and collaboration with staff
Assist in the process of data collection and analysis using varied instrumentation and software; provide proper documentation and organization to ensure integrity and organization of collected data
Apply basic statistical knowledge; understand, interpret, and describe complex data by preparing graphs and tables
Participate in the preparation, review, and submission of manuscripts and abstracts for publication
Attend courses, lectures and conferences to further own knowledge of research and laboratory techniques, consulting with other researchers and technicians to exchange information
To qualify, you must have:
Bachelor degree in Biomedical Engineering, Biology, Mechanical Engineering or a related scientific discipline. Candidates with a master's degree or those in medical school are encouraged to apply
The analytical skills to resolve complex problems requiring the use of scientific, mathematical, or technical principles and in-depth, experienced-based knowledge
Research experience and practical knowledge of research principles ithrough previous internship, work experience, or coursework. Experience in medical imaging research, with commonly used image processing tools and analytical methods is preferred
Excellent critical thinking skills
The ability to communicate effectively both orally and in writing
Knowledge of orthopaedic biomechanics, human anatomy, image processing and computational simulations highly preferred
Knowledge of image segmentation and processing (e.g. Matlab, Python, Mimics) preferred.
During a public health emergency, individuals in this role may be expected to take on additional duties to respond to organizational needs.
