The Advance Practice Provider (APP) works collaboratively with an Infectious Diseases supervising physician to provide direct clinical care for patients admitted to the hospital with infections of the musculoskeletal system. Typical infections include osteomyelitis, septic arthritis and necrotizing skin and soft tissue infections. Consultative care is provided five days a week (no weekends) in close collaboration with surgical (orthopedics, podiatry and general surgery) and hospitalist teams. Workload typically consists of 2-5 new consults per day with follow-up previously seen patients as needed. The patient panel commonly ranges from 5-15 inpatients.
The APP will aslo see patients in the ambulatory orthopedic infectious diseses clinic and monitor patients on outpatient parenteral antibiotic therapy (OPAT).. The APP works in close communication with the unit's multidisciplinary team which includes social work, care management, medical assistants, nursing, research, pharmacy and others to help coordinate comprehensive care for their patients. This position may assist in the educational training of future providers and students.
This is a 6 month position.
1. Delivers superior patient care and encourages increased patient understanding and involvement in care. 2. Determines and assesses the health status of patients by reviewing records, taking comprehensive medical histories, and performing physical examinations. 3. Monitors and evaluates medical condition of patient. 4. Initiates, performs, or directs other healthcare professionals to perform screenings and diagnostic tests. 5. Makes decisions regarding treatment changes and refers patient to specialized services as needed. 6. Orders and administers appropriate medications (oral and IV antibiotics) within the limits of the appropriate statutory limitations. 7. Completes required documentation legibly, thoroughly, and in a timely manner. Prepares and maintains complete and accurate charts, case files, and records. 8. Participates in clinical education of healthcare students as seen fit by the supervising medical staff. 9. May be assigned to perform lead work and/or involvement in clinical coordination, health station management or responsibility for special projects which may encompass protocol development, management planning, scheduling and other administrative tasks as necessary to support the practice environment. This includes set up and ongoing communication with patients and home infusion companies to deliver outpatient IV antibiotics (OPAT) 10. Attends and participates in administrative staff, program, and Department meetings. 11. Utilizes the principles and practices of effective communication to elicit information, negotiate problem resolution, and/or garner support for various programs or policies. 12. Follows established departmental policies and procedures and adheres to any quality improvement, safety, environmental and infection control standards. 13. Conducts clinical activities as defined in the privileging documents for this provider.

* Bachelor's Degree (Required) 1. Bachelor's Degree from an accredited school of nursing and successful completion of an approved nurse practitioner program or graduation from an accredited educational program for Physician Assistants and successful completion of certification from the National Commission on Certification of Physician Assistant. Masters preferred.2. One year related clinical experience preferred.
