JOB DESCRIPTION: Senior Trauma Registrar/ Coder II LOCATION: Danville DEPARTMENT: Pediatric General Surgery WORK SCHEDULE: Rotation WORK TYPE: Full Time
JOB SUMMARY: Utilizes the medical record documentation to extract the diagnoses and procedures performed; organizes data to ensure legal maximization of injury scoring; assigns appropriate code numbers to the diagnoses and procedures; reviews the medical record for patient data including admission and discharge specific data and enters data into the trauma registry abstract via computer terminal.
Performs duties to support the goals and objectives of the Medical Center and Trauma Program in its efforts to provide quality patient care, patient satisfaction and maintain trauma accreditation.
Reports to the Manager, Trauma Program.
COMPETENCIES AND SKILLS: Demonstrated training in and ability to apply medical terminology, anatomy and physiology.
Demonstrated knowledge of the coding classifications.
Demonstrated computer keyboard skills.
Demonstrated effective communication skills.
EDUCATION AND/OR EXPERIENCE: RHIT certification, CSTR certification or minimum five years trauma registry experience preferred. CSTR certification is required within two years of starting the position.
Previous coding experience in an acute care hospital setting preferred.
Requires 9-12 months on-the-job training for a new employee.
WORKING CONDITIONS/PHYSICAL DEMANDS: Work is typically performed in an office environment.

GEISINGER MEDICAL CENTER: (GMC), located Danville, Pa., the largest tertiary/quaternary care teaching hospital in the region, is licensed for 475 beds, including 89 pediatric beds in the Janet Weis Children’s Hospital. GMC, a Magnet Hospital, maintains the region’s only Level 1 Regional Resource Trauma Center with additional qualifications in pediatrics. GMC offers an array of highly specialized medical and surgical services, including neurosciences, cardiovascular services, transplantation, women’s health (in the Women’s Pavilion), oncology and orthopaedics. The Hospital for Advanced Medicine serves as an integrated center for the most critical patients. Outpatient services are available on and off campus.
