This position is in the Department of Internal Medicine, Division of Bone and Mineral Diseases, located on the Medical School Campus.
The Division of Bone and Mineral Diseases at the Washington University School of Medicine is part of a dynamic multidisciplinary community of researchers dedicated to the study of local and systemic diseases affecting bone metabolism. In early 2012, the Division moved to a new space in the BJCIH as part of a Center for Musculoskeletal Research.
There is an opportunity for a postdoctoral researcher to join the laboratory of Dr. Deborah Veis. The research interest of the lab is to elucidate the cellular and molecular mechanisms underlying pathological bone loss. Current projects involve the study of mitochondria functions in bone cells. Approaches include the use of genetically engineered mice, models of pathological bone loss, and in vitro culture of bone cells.
The postdoctoral researcher conducts research projects, including developing new project concepts, developing and refining experimental approaches, data analysis, presentation and publication of experiment results. In addition, they are also encouraged to develop grant proposals, consistent with their eligibility, and contribute to proposals initiated by Dr. Veis.
Excellent skills in cell culture and molecular biology, mouse genotyping, plasmid and retrovirus preparation and gene transfer, and protein analysis (Western blot, FACS, IHC/IF and ELISA).
Previous experience with analysis of mitochondrial function and genetic manipulation would be a plus, as would experience with whole animal imaging approaches such as microCT.
Strong written and oral communication skills are also essential, including a demonstrated ability to publish research results as peer-reviewed journal articles.
The applicant must demonstrate computer literacy including the ability to use a variety of software packages to store, analyze and present data (Excel, Word, PowerPoint, etc.).
The applicant should be highly motivated, eager and quick to learn, careful, organized, and reliable.
The candidate must be able to work independently and communicate with laboratory staff and collaborating investigators.
Applicant must possess a doctoral level degree (Ph.D., M.D., Pharm.D. or equivalent).
Base pay commensurate with experience.
