Pennsylvania Hospital (PAH) is a Magnet designated organization and part of Penn Medicine - one of the world’s leading academic medical centers dedicated to the related missions of medical education, biomedical research, and excellence in patient care. PAH, with 515 licensed beds, cares for approximately 23,000 inpatient admissions, 22,500 surgical procedures, 5,207 births, 33,000 emergency room visits and 85,000 outpatient visits annually. Pennsylvania Hospital’s mission is to provide compassionate care to patients and families on their healthcare journey. PAH is a teaching hospital, with independent residencies in Medicine, OB-GYN, Radiology, and Pathology as well as serving as a major teaching site for residents and fellows in various surgical and other specialties across Penn Medicine. PAH’s clinical areas of expertise include: Women’s Health, Neurosciences, Musculoskeletal, Oncology, Heart and Vascular, and Behavioral Health.
Pennsylvania Hospital is seeking a Chief Nursing Officer (CNO) to lead a Nursing organization that provides integrated, effective, and innovative patient care. The CNO will be a member of the Executive Leadership Team, and work seamlessly with the Chief Medical Officer, Medical Executive Committee, and other clinical leaders to deliver highest quality compassionate nursing care and services. The CNO at PAH is accountable to develop and implement the hospital’s mission, strategic plans, patient care programs, budgets, resource allocations, operational plans and policies in an integrated manner. Magnet re-designation (2.0) is underway with a site visit expected at the end of 2019. As a member of Executive Leadership, the CNO will be a transformational leader, who fosters constructive partnerships and collaborative relationships within a complex health organization, across Penn Medicine and The University of Pennsylvania’s School of Medicine and School of Nursing. Functional responsibilities include the direction of Clinical Directors, effective Education and Training programs, encouraging clinical nursing research and maintaining Magnet Program designation. The CNO assumes responsibility and oversight for maintaining comparable nursing care standards in all patient care settings, including non-direct reporting areas, such as Nurse Practitioners assigned to clinical departments, and Perioperative Services. The CNO at Pennsylvania Hospital holds an appointment at the University of Pennsylvania School of Nursing.
Bachelor and Masters’ degrees one of which must be in nursing. Active or eligible for RN licensure in Pennsylvania. Doctoral degree in Nursing or related field strongly preferred.
Appropriate experience includes 15+ years of increasing responsibility in clinical nursing and nursing leadership.
Experience in clinical settings related to PAH’s clinical areas of expertise i.e. Women’s Health, Neurosciences, Musculoskeletal, Oncology, Heart and Vascular, and Behavioral Health.
Experience in leadership, management, analytics and finance.
Demonstrated success in academic nursing and ambulatory care nursing required.
Demonstrated success in clinical nursing research including excellent track record in research-based scholarly publications and presentations.
Evidence of effectiveness in translating research-based interventions into effective clinical practices.
Excellent verbal and written communication skills.
