The Department of Emergency Medicine at UNC-CH is seeking a research assistant to support a federally-funded, 5-year clinical trial of a pain management intervention. The BETTER Trial will test two versions of a patient education intervention among adults ages 50 and over presenting with acute musculoskeletal pain in the UNC Hospitals Emergency Department.
The RA will work closely with the principle investigator, study coordinator, and other staff to accomplish study milestones and goals. The RA's primary responsibility will be to conduct the 1 week, 1 month, 3 month, 6 month and 12 month follow-up phone interviews for all participants. In addition, they will manage participant mailings. The research assistant will complete data entry for all follow-up interviews. They will support the study coordinator in maintaining effective patient tracking systems. This research assistant will also assist the study coordinator with preparing for annual meetings, maintaining study materials and supplies, and replenishing materials as needed. During years 4 and 5 the research assistant will also assist with preparing/formatting tables and figures for publications, as well as other activities related to manuscript preparation. Additionally, in year 5 the research assistant will assist study Co-Investigators in healthcare utilization analysis. Prior research experience including patient interaction, protocol development, and data management will be prioritized.
Education and Experience:
Bachelor’s degree; or equivalent combination of training and experience. All degrees must be received from appropriately accredited institutions.
A successful candidate will have excellent interpersonal, organizational, and writing skills, as well as the ability to work independently.
Experience related to emergency medicine research. Familiarity with research concepts (study design, study protocol, human subjects research, and data management).
