University of Minnesota Physicians seeks a Certified Nurse Practitioner or Certified Physician Assistant to join the University of Minnesota Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation (PM&R) team at the Fairview Acute Rehabilitation Center at the University of Minnesota Medical Center-West Bank. The Division of PM&R at the University of Minnesota has a near 70-year history with a reputation of excellence.
The specialty of Physical Medicine & Rehabilitation helps restore and enhance function to provide the fullest possible quality of life to individuals with a wide range of disorders, disabilities, injuries, and musculoskeletal conditions including: stroke, spinal cord injuries, brain injuries, multiple sclerosis, amputation, cancer, transplant, sports injuries, cerebral palsy, movement disorders, as well as other neuromuscular and neurodegenerative disorders. PM&R focuses on the whole person; including family, work, and social life.
In this full-time position, the NP/PA will work collaboratively with academic PM&R physicians and the rest of the experienced, highly specialized, rehabilitation care team - which consists of a physician assistant; nurses (including Certified Rehabilitation nurses, and nursing assistants); physical therapists; occupational therapists; respiratory therapists; speech-language pathologists; and medical trainees. The PA/NP will deliver exceptional care to patients with complex medical conditions at the Fairview Acute Rehabilitation Center at the University of Minnesota Medical Center-West Bank. The Fairview Acute Rehabilitation Center is a CARF-certified, inpatient acute rehabilitation unit, in which the mission is to support patients in their return to the community as freely and independently.
The PM&R team is looking for a motivated NP/PA who is driven to be a leader in the field, collaborative, and a team player who will cross-cover as needs arise. Refined interpersonal and communication skills are required, as well as precise written and verbal handoffs to subsequent team members. Key responsibilities of this position include:
Evaluate and treat medically complex patients independently
Optimization of care plan, algorithm development, and coordination of care
Conduct new patient evaluations and follow-ups
Daily rounding with rehabilitation team
Refer patients to the appropriate physiatrist and/or other specialist, accordingly
Educate patients and families regarding disease process, interventions, discharge transitions and postoperative and post-procedural care
Actively participate in staff education, independent or requested consultation, research, and administrative activities
Ability and motivation to learn new, complex areas of care and maintain current field-related knowledge and practices
Assist with call, rotating schedule
Potential for telemedicine visits and/or outpatient visits
Monday – Friday, primarily day shift, with occasional evening and weekend morning hours.
The PA or NP is an experienced member of the health care team who uses advanced practice skill with the supervision/collaboration of licensed physicians to provide comprehensive health care services to patients. The Physician Assistant/Nurse Practitioner engages in independent decision making about health care needs and provides health care services to adult individuals throughout their life span. Provides physical and psychological health assessments, patient education and counseling, orders and interprets diagnostic procedures, and manages acute and chronic disease conditions ensuring continuity of care for individuals in the communities served.
A qualified candidate will be a graduate of an accredited school of nursing and formal Adult Practitioner training program or a graduate of an accredited Physician's Assistant program. Have a current MN RN license and be approved, or eligible, by the Minnesota Board of Nursing for prescription writing privileges or a current PA license with prescriptive authority through the MN Board of Medical Practice. Be certified through ANCC/AANP or eligible for ANCC/AANP national exam or through the NCCPA and meet threshold criteria/qualifications for Credentialing and Privileges.
Previous patient care experience is preferred. Experience in PM&R is ideal, but not required. CRRN certification is preferred, but not required. New graduates with prior inpatient experience as an RN or other allied health professional will be considered.
