The UCSF Department of Physical Therapy and Rehabilitation Science (DPTRS) is recruiting for an Assistant or Associate Professor in the Adjunct or In-Residence series. The successful candidate will join a dedicated and dynamic group of faculty and staff members committed to developing professionals in physical therapy practice, rehabilitation science research, education, and discovery and translation of science to improve health and health delivery systems.
Candidates must have a PhD and demonstrated expertise in the field of Biomechanical Engineering and/or related field. The applicant will be expected to conduct investigative human subject research involving the development and advancement of wearable sensors, quantitative clinical assessment systems, robotic rehabilitation and assistive systems. Additionally, candidates must have demonstrated experience in traditional biomechanical instrumentation, including marker and markerless motion-capture, force platforms, and surface electromyography; biomechanical modelling and estimation including kinematic, kinetic, and dynamic analysis; and experience in robotic modelling and control. Preferred qualifications and skills include programming fluency in MATLAB, C++, CAD, PCB development, tooling, and fabrication techniques.
This applicant will collaborate with clinicians on translational research studies that utilize digital and assistive technologies to understand patient health status and to improve musculoskeletal and neuromuscular health outcomes. Preferably, the candidate will have experience as a postdoctoral trainee with demonstrated experience in initiating and leading clinical research studies and conducting research that is of interest to both industry-partners and publicly funded agencies. Candidates must have a multi-disciplinary background covering aspects of basic, clinical and translational research. A strong research record as an independent investigator is essential. This includes evidence of publishing in peer-reviewed journals and having the potential for external grant funding.
The applicant will have strong written, verbal and presentation skills and an ability to communicate and work with a diverse stakeholder group including patients, clinicians, researchers, engineers and trainees. Applicants must have experience teaching, mentoring, and advising trainees from the clinic (residents, fellows), affiliated PhD programs (doctoral students from the joint UCSF/UC Berkeley Bioengineering program and UCSF Physical Therapy and Rehabilitation Science program), and the joint UCSF/UC Berkeley Masters in Translational Medicine program. The Department of Physical Therapy and Rehabilitation Science (DPTRS) is one of 27 departments within the UCSF School of Medicine. With 23 core faculty (clinical, teaching, and/or research), 2 Orthopedic Residents, 1 Acute Care Resident, 2 PhD Students, 150 DPT graduate students, and 46 Volunteer Clinical Faculty, the DPTRS also operates several faculty practice outpatient clinics, and a Health and Wellness Center, for a total of 135 faculty and staff. The DPT program is a joint program with San Francisco State University, adding another 5 core faculty members.
