Oversees the day-to-day activities of the Orthopaedic Technologists, and ensures that all patients' needs are handled in a timely, professional manner. Supervises the Orthopaedic Technologists, with full authority to hire, fire, and discipline under the direction and guidance of the Department HR Manager and Clinic Manager. Oversees individual employee development and training, and conducts performance appraisals.
Specific duties & responsibilities:
Troubleshoot and resolve problems as they arise. Resolve patient problems or refers patients to appropriate resources. Intervenes, as necessary, on issues relating to patient complaints, health care providers' concerns, and operational issues, and take measures to correct situation or ensure appropriate personnel are involved.
Promote a team environment among staff and faculty. Approve all vacation and sick requests and coordinate vacation schedules among direct reports, ensuring coverage remains available during vacations, holidays (as applicable) and during weather events.
Ensure compliance with HR issues, i.e Time and Attendance, Weather Emergency Responsibilities, HIPPA Certifications, COG training, EPR Recertification, etc. Responsible for coordinating employee time off, vacation coverage, and monitoring daily coverage of the office and overtime approval.
Responsible for applying, adjusting and removing casts splints, etc. Responsible for assembling and attaching orthopedic traction equipment. Responsible for applying various orthopedic equipment. Provides care to both adult and pediatric patient populations. Properly positions both adult and pediatric orthopedic patients for procedures. Practices safety measures in all aspects of care. Ability to work with durable medical equipment (DME) supplies. Assist physicians/surgeons with orthopaedic technology clinical activities in the ambulatory setting and in the operating room setting as needed. Attend local clinic and departmental meetings as required. Responsible for problem solving both clinical activities in concert with the clinic manager and medical director; resolve orthopaedic technologist employee relations issues. Convene and conduct regularly scheduled meetings with the orthopaedic technologists as well as attend departmental or local clinic required meetings. Responsible for creating and maintaining orthopaedic technologist float schedules and for directing ortho technologist resources to clinics when/where these resources are needed to facilitate appropriate and successful clinical continuity of care within the Department of Orthopaedics. Responsible for purchasing and inventorying DME supplies if necessary. Required to use the EPIC electronic medical records system for document patient care as is necessary for successful clinical care of the orthopaedic patients. Complete all other duties as assigned.

Minimum qualifications (mandatory):
A two-year college degree in a related discipline
Completion of technical training at an accredited Healthcare Educational Institute & 3 years supervisory experience*
5 years of technical training in Orthopedic Patient care & 3 years supervisory experience*
Completion of technical training from any branch of the US Military Services Healthcare Technical Training Entities & 3 years supervisory experience*
*Supervisory experience does not necessarily need to have been in the field of orthopedics)
Special knowledge, skills, and abilities:
Knowledge of recording and reporting pertinent clinical data.
Knowledge of setting up and management of specialized patient care equipment.
Knowledge requires analytical skills to gather and interpret data in situations in which the information or problems are relatively routine.
Knowledge of the ability to exchanges information on factual matters, greet visitors, explain ambulatory center policies, and/or relay messages to appropriate personnel. This type of interaction requires courtesy and tact when dealing with patients, visitors and/or ambulatory personal.
Determine appropriate information and resources needed r/t clinical situation
Applies and adjusts splints, casts, braces, etc. using tools and instruments such as cast cutters, spreaders, bending irons, fracture table, etc.
Fabricates casts using special materials such as plaster of Paris, fiberglass resin, polyethylene, cotton, stockinet, etc.
Sets traction units and/or regulates special orthopedic devices as directed by the physician or resident.
Assists physicians in the operating room in applying casts, i.e. spica and full body.
Assists physicians in the clinic areas as needed, i.e. with suture/staple removal, wound care.
Assist physicians on teaching the patients how to move and function with casts, splints, braces and other restrictive devices.
Refer patients to the provider with any reports of swelling, pain and discomfort of orthopaedic appliances.
Reviews inventory of orthopedic supplies to ensure appropriate and state of the art equipment is available to all patient populations served.
Organize and summarize information.
Highly effective verbal communication and interpersonal skills to establish working relationships that foster positive patient care.
Ability to use computer keyboard functions to input and obtain data.
Responsible for billing for supplies and services rendered.
Technical qualifications or specialized certifications:
Requires NAOT (National Association of Orthopaedic Technologists) certification as a Certified Orthopaedic Technologist; or ASOP (American Society of Orthopaedic Professionals) registration as a Registered Orthopaedic Technologist.
Note: If certification through NOAT or registration through ASOP is not attained upon hire, either of these requirements must be met within 12 months of the employee's hire date.
Orthopedic tools, including but not limited to; cast cutters, staple remover, spreaders, bending irons, spica table, etc.
Any specific physical requirements for the job: Work requires standing and/or walking for extended periods of time.
Work requires lifting 35lbs without assistance, unless special accommodations are in place. When lifting weight above 35 lbs assistance or assistive lifting devices should be used.
Work requires manual dexterity and hand-eye coordination to perform delegated patient care procedures.
Employees in this position will be required to adhere to work availability and clinic scheduling guidelines. This may include covering a different clinic location performing the same job functions.
Supervisory responsibility (indicate the number and type of persons supervised by incumbent): 10
Supervise orthopaedic technologists staff across the orthopaedic enterprise, interpreting and communicating operating polices. Human resources duties include coaching, providing feedback, and taking disciplinary action when necessary. Develop skills of employees to optimize overall clinic performance. Ensure employee compliance training is up to date. Convene and conduct regularly scheduled meetings with the orthopaedic technologists as well as attend departmental or local clinic required meetings. Responsible for creating and maintaining orthopaedic technologist float schedules and for directing ortho technologist resources to clinics when/where these resources are needed to facilitate appropriate and successful clinical continuity of care within the Department of Orthopaedics. Makes recommendations to senior leadership in matters of hiring and firing for staff under their purview and executes hire/fire actions in conjunction with Human Resources Manager upon receiving senior leadership approval
