The Orthopaedic Research Laboratory within the Department of Orthopaedic Surgery is seeking a Research and Development Scientist and Engineer 2, to serve as the Director of the Biomechanics lab and apply a variety of engineering skills in collaboration with surgical and research faculty to execute experiments addressing orthopaedic engineering problems. The successful candidate will have expertise in mechanical testing of materials for failure analysis, knowledge of sensors and software systems necessary for data acquisition and the ability to manage data collection, storage and analysis, and be expected to provide effective communication of results and design parameters to teams as well as contributing to publications and posters. Working in multidisciplinary teams, the Director provides guidance regarding experimental design and testing strategies. The Director works in collaboration with lab engineers to design and fabricate experimental set-ups, execute mechanical tests, perform data analysis, and create results summaries for research studies, including those related to fracture fixation, tendon and ligament repair, soft tissue injury evaluation, cartilage and bone tissue engineering, and screw biomechanics.
Additionally, the Director is responsible for maintaining and troubleshooting laboratory equipment, ensuring adequate adherence to safety regulations, managing laboratory support and the maintenance of laboratory records. The Director is responsible for working with the other lab managers in the Edwards building to ensure these tasks are accomplished. The Director is also responsible for ensuring the ongoing renovations of the Edwards buildings have minimal interference with the Orthopaedic PI labs. Provide leadership and scientific expertise in the planning and implementation of major projects, services, facilities, and activities.
Develop advanced technological ideas, and guide their development into a final product or new approaches to research. Carry out complex or unique assignments important to the advancement of the field.
Provide expert consultation and collaboration regarding technical requirements, capabilities, and advancement opportunities; make substantive contributions in diverse technical areas.
Provide technical direction to other research staff, engineering associates, technicians, and/or students; facilitate workshops and demonstrations on research methods; educate and train users on research methodology and effective tools and techniques.
Contribute to or co-author published articles, presentations, or scientific papers; identify research and development funding opportunities.
Supervise staff and resources to meet program objectives.
* - Other duties may also be assigned DESIRED QUALIFICATIONS:
Advanced degree in mechanical/biomechanical engineering or related field.
Proficiencies with 3D CAD software (Fusion 360 or SOLIDWORKS preferred), MATLAB, Microsoft Office, and a computer programming language.
EDUCATION & EXPERIENCE (REQUIRED): Bachelor's degree and five years of relevant experience, or combination of education and relevant experience.
KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES (REQUIRED):
Expert knowledge of the principles of engineering and related natural sciences.
Demonstrated project leadership experience.
Demonstrated experience leading and/or managing technical professionals.
Frequently grasp lightly/fine manipulation, perform desk-based computer tasks, lift/carry/push/pull objects that weigh up to 10 pounds.
Occasionally stand/walk, sit, twist/bend/stoop/squat, grasp forcefully.
Rarely kneel/crawl, climb (ladders, scaffolds, or other), reach/work above shoulders, use a telephone, writing by hand, sort/file paperwork or parts, operate foot and/or hand controls, lift/carry/push/pull objects that weigh >40 pounds.
