Description The Orthopaedic Biomechanics Laboratory within the Department of Orthopaedic Surgery - Stanford University School of Medicine collaborates with department faculty undertaking studies addressing a broad range of orthopaedic engineering problems. Previous projects include studies addressing fracture fixation, joint replacement, tendon and ligament repair, soft tissue injury evaluation, cartilage and bone tissue engineering, and screw biomechanics. The lab incorporates multiple materials testing systems along with machining equipment for the fabrication of custom components.
The Orthopaedic Biomechanics Laboratory is seeking a highly motivated Research and Development Engineer to apply a variety of engineering skills to design and execute biomechanical and mechanical experiments. The successful candidate will work in collaboration with surgical and research faculty and senior technical staff.

- Design and execute biomechanical tests; perform data collection and analysis, and interpret test results.
- Develop new mechanical testing protocols or adapt previously published protocols to create new test methods to effectively evaluate soft tissue injuries and orthopaedic implants.
- Design and fabricate custom components and assemblies for experimental setups and new surgical devices.
- Prepare and write reports; draft and prepare scientific papers; contribute to portions of published articles or presentations.
- Maintain testing equipment; provide general laboratory support.
- Manage multiple research projects concurrently.
- Provide technical direction and training to other research staff and students, as needed.
Qualifications DESIRED QUALIFICATIONS:
EDUCATION & EXPERIENCE (REQUIRED):
- Experience with mechanical test systems (ex: Instron, MTS), LabVIEW, robotics, and finite element analysis.
KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES (REQUIRED):
- Bachelor's degree in mechanical/biomechanical engineering or related field.
- Thorough knowledge of the principles of engineering and related natural sciences.
- Proficiencies with 3D CAD software (Fusion 360 or SOLIDWORKS preferred), MATLAB, Microsoft Office, and a computer programming language.
- Fabrication/prototyping experience.
- Demonstrated project management experience; ability to manage and complete multiple projects concurrently.
- Excellent verbal and written communication skills.
- Ability to work independently and in teams.
