Using the support of technology, telephone triage nurses assess the patient's health status to determine the urgency or emergency of the call, provide callers with health information, and offer decision support for timely access to the appropriate health care provider for both acute and chronic health conditions. Utilizes delegation and critical thinking skills to provide quality service through a team oriented, collaborative approach to patient care.

Support Carilion's hallmarks of service excellence and quality for all job responsibilities. As a member of the Navigated Patient Scheduling Center, triages incoming calls. As part of the health care team, assumes primary accountability for nursing coordination and provision of individualized care for patients of all ages. Utilizes delegation and critical thinking skills to provide quality service through a team oriented, collaborative approach to patient care.
Minimum Qualifications Required
Education: Graduate of accredited school of professional nursing. BS RN preferred.
Experience: Minimum of 5 years of varied nursing experience preferred, with some of this in inpatient nursing. Prior experience triaging telephone calls preferred.
Licensure, certification, and/or registration: Currently licensed as Registered Nurse (RN) in the Commonwealth of Virginia or new graduate of approved program eligible to sit for the Virginia licensure exam required.
Other Minimum Qualifications: Must successfully complete orientation and competency requirements. AHA BLS- HCP preferred. Keyboarding skills required for automated computer systems, including electronic medical records. Must be able to meet essential job functions. Must have advanced nursing skill and knowledge across the specialties. Excellent communications and critical thinking skills required. Must be able to quickly establish rapport with customers over the phone. Excellent verbal and non-verbal communication skills. Able to multi-task and work well with minimal supervision. Computer skills and telecommunication skills are a must. Able to sit and talk on the phone for extended periods of time. Will work with providers to develop protocols to guide work. Ability to respond to live, incoming neurosurgery symptom based calls.
