The University of Connecticut invites applications for the position of Associate Director (AD) of MRI Operations. This full-time, renewable, 11-month, non tenure-track appointment is for an assistant research professor.
UConn has embarked on an ambitious program of faculty and student growth, including growing its cognitive neuroscience community. In support, UConn has opened the 3,200 square foot, research-dedicated Brain Imaging Research Center housing a Siemens Prisma 3 Tesla scanner. The primary focus of the center is cognitive neuroscience research using functional MRI. However, the scanner is also used for structural MRI, diffusion tensor imaging, simultaneous EEG, and magnetic resonance spectroscopy (MRS), and it supports cardiovascular and musculoskeletal imaging research. Facilities are suitable for scanning individuals from infancy to elderly adults, as well as clinical populations.
The Associate Director, under the supervision of the BIRC Director, will oversee, coordinate, and manage all aspects of the use of BIRC facilities. The AD will provide scientific and technical expertise to Center users and be responsible for day-to-day Center operations. The AD will:
- Provide expertise in experimental design and data analysis. Consult with faculty and researchers to design and implement structural, functional, and diffusion-weighted neuroimaging experimental protocols and scanning sequences. Evaluate scanning protocols and consult on data analyses.
- Through courses and workshops, help train researchers on acquisition, data analysis, and safety procedures.
- Support manuscript and grant-writing efforts. Hire, train, and supervise technical and administrative staff. Ensure that all users of the Center are properly trained on equipment and competent in its use.
- Establish and maintain operational policies and procedures.
- Ensure and maintain required documentation for compliance with safety, environmental and infection control standards, and with local, state, and federal regulations.
- Maintain careful records of all work performed.
- Have the opportunity to advance his or her own program of research.
A Ph.D. or M.D. in cognitive science, neuroscience, psychology, biomedical engineering, medical physics, physics or related field. Significant functional MRI experience, with expertise in one or more of: diffusion imaging, volumetry, susceptibility-weighted imaging, MR spectroscopy, MR relaxometry, cardiovascular and musculoskeletal imaging, and/or multi-modal imaging techniques. Strong skills in one or more common functional neuroimaging software packages (e.g., AFNI, FSL, or SPM). Previous laboratory management experience. Excellent communication skills.
Possess the flexibility and expertise to (1) support research across a variety of content areas and (2) implement advances and new approaches in neuroimaging data collection and analysis. Evidence of successful teaching of MRI methods at the graduate and/or undergraduate level. Involvement in prior sponsored research projects using MRI methods. Demonstrated skills in MRI pulse sequence programming. Experience operating an MRI console. Evidence of an independent research program. Knowledge and experience with EEG, TMS, and/or tDCS.
The anticipated start date is March 1, 2017, but is negotiable. Salary will be commensurate with qualifications and experience.
