The Department of Environmental Health and Safety (EH&S) is seeking an experienced industrial hygienist to work as part of team of subject matter experts to identify, evaluate, and control health and safety risks across University operations. This position is expected to take a leadership role in EH&S efforts to shift injury reduction efforts towards more proactive interventions, enhance the incident analysis processes to address root causes, and utilize data to improve decision making and support an adaptive problem-solving approach to program improvement. Typical duties include working closely with campus groups to support assessment and control of chemical and physical hazards, developing/ implementing health and safety programs, leading incident analysis, and creating/ delivering engaging safety training. In addition to providing routine EH&S program services, staff are to provide support as needed during University emergencies.
All EH&S staff must comply with governmental regulations, and University and departmental policies and procedures regarding health and safety and must observe and support good health and safety practices.
Under minimal supervision, staff performs the most complex technical work in a wide range of environmental, health, and safety disciplines to ensure a safe work environment and to achieve compliance with the university's environmental, health, and safety standards and governmental regulatory requirements.

Recommend and implement improvements in processes, design, procedures, and operating equipment to minimize the hazard potential.
Act as a lead or technical expert, providing functional direction and training in the overall application of health and safety programs.
Additional Core Duties:
Work under consultative or self-initiated direction to develop, implement, and maintain programs, systems, and procedures necessary to ensure the overall safety and health of faculty, staff, and students.
Conduct comprehensive, independent compliance assurance reviews of environmental, health, and safety policies and procedures; prepare accompanying management reports, documentation, and evaluations.
Monitor and prevent potential hazards and unsafe conditions that could be present in the laboratory environment.
Investigate incidents, injuries, and complaints concerning potential hazards or unsafe conditions in the laboratory environment.
May lead or supervise a team responsible for developing and implementing health and safety programs.
Provide support as needed during University emergencies.

Education and Experience: Bachelor's degree in arts/science in related allied/scientific field and five to seven years of progressively responsible experience in the occupational safety and health field
Work experience in an academic/research environment
Certified Industrial Hygienist (CIH, American Board of Industrial Hygiene)
Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:
Demonstrated ability to conduct effective health and safety surveys, quantitative and qualitative exposure/risk assessment, data analysis, and ability to provide recommendations for exposure/ risk control.
Additional Other Required Skills and Abilities:
Understanding of occupational safety and health principles and applications, with demonstrated competency in identification and evaluation of workplace health/ safety hazards including but not limited to chemicals, physical agents, and musculoskeletal strain.
Ability to conduct assessment for novel workplace exposure risks, adapting and applying industrial hygiene principles and practices to situations where only limited technical literature and guidance may be available.
Proficient in the use of industrial hygiene monitoring instruments.
Knowledge of laws, regulations, consensus standards, and current developments with health and safety trends.
Exceptional customer service skills, including strong interpersonal skills, such as empathy for and patience with clientele.
Strong communication skills, including the ability to present information clearly and succinctly verbally, in writing, and in presentations.
Excellent organizational skills, as demonstrated by the ability to manage competing priorities efficiently and to work well under pressure in a fast-paced, multi-taking environment.
Ability to mentor/ coach junior staff with professional competencies.
Strong self-motivation; proactive, high-energy, enthusiastic, can do work ethic; ability to handle potentially stressful situations.
Ability to maintain a valid non-commercial California Driver's License Additional Physical Requirements:
Ability to move safely over uneven and/or slippery terrain or in confined spaces.
Ability to perform duties while wearing required respiratory equipment (must pass required medical exam); ability to crawl, bend, climb ladders, and lift and carry heavy equipment (40 lbs. or more).
