The Stanford School of Medicine, Department of Orthopaedic Surgery seeks a talented Life Science Research Professional 2 (LSRP 2) to perform complex bench level experiments as part of a laboratory studying orthopaedic biomaterials and tissue engineering of musculoskeletal cells using in vitro and in vivo models. The laboratory performs research on ways to improve the integration of materials for joint replacement, and innovative cellular and molecular methods for improving bone healing via immunomodulation and drug delivery. The LSRP 2 will serve as a technical resource for the department's joint PIs whose tissue engineering approaches for improved treatment of early stage osteonecrosis of the hips and will be responsible for independently planning and performing laboratory experiments including cell culture, cellular and molecular biology techniques, real-time PCR, virus preparation and infections, and cell imaging and data analyses. The LRSP 2 will also establish, conduct, and evaluate various procedures, the isolation and culture of cells and their reprogramming, preparation and maintenance of specialized culture medium, molecular, cell and biochemical analyses including real time PCR, western blotting and immunofluorescence imaging. A four-year degree in Cell and/or Molecular Biology, or related field and a general understanding of biological sciences principles.
The ability to research and adapt to current techniques of cell culture, molecular biology techniques, real-time PCR, virus preparation and infections, and cell imaging and data analysis.
The ability to work flexible hours that are dependent on experimental conditions and sudden availability of tissue samples.
Manual dexterity and excellent technical skills; ability to work efficiently and independently; capable of multitasking.
Strong computer skills: MS Word, Excel, Power Point, and excellent written and verbal communication skills.
An advanced degree and work-related experience desired.
Familiarity with preparing results for publication.
Perform complex (lab and/or field) experiments for a major portion of the research project. Maintain detailed records of experiments and outcomes.
Interpret and analyze results, often where few guidelines exist. Based on prior results, contribute to development of new research protocols and procedures or adaptation of existing protocols.
Make recommendations on plan design and/or research direction to principal investigator.
Work with health and safety department to ensure lab complies with regulations and all required trainings.
Participate in multidisciplinary teams across different faculties or schools.
Oversee supply and equipment budget under supervision of principal investigator or business manager.
Perform ongoing literature review to remain current with new procedures and related research; present findings for lab work group.
Contribute substantively to the preparation of papers for publication, especially in the results section. May contribute to publication of findings and present ongoing work and findings to colleagues at academic conferences.
Supervise (either formally or informally) staff or students as needed, including oversight and instruction on techniques, as well as consultation on project work. Serve as technical resource for other research staff.
Perform general lab maintenance as needed; maintain lab stock, manage chemical inventory and safety records, and provide general lab support as needed. May assist with purchasing laboratory equipment.

EDUCATION & EXPERIENCE (REQUIRED):
Bachelor's degree in related scientific field and three years of related experience, or Master's degree.
