Position Summary: We have an exciting opportunity to join our team as a Patient Care Technician.
In this role, the successful candidate Position Summary:Under direction supervision, assists the professional nurse in performance of duties related to direct or indirect patient care.
Performs other duties as assigned.
Reports all patient/visitor accidents. Maintains a safe, clean environment. Reports unsafe working conditions and faulty equipment.
Ensures safety of patient, visitors and hospital employees. Reports all work-related accidents/injuries and demonstrates appropriate follow through.
Uses a clear, caring and respectful communication style with patients and families, nurses and other members of the health care team. Functions as a respectful member of the health care team.
Responds to requests for specific tasks as delegated by any registered professional nurse. Answers patients call lights promptly and effectively; completes patient requests for assistance with personal care and activity, and reports those requests not within the role of the patient care technician to the professional nurse assigned to the patient.
Maintains cleanliness of the nursing unit as appropriate to position. (i.e., utility room, unit refrigerators, etc.). Reports all observations concerning patients to the professional nurse responsible for the patient on a given shift.
Gives direct assistance to all team members, including registered nurses, licensed practical nurses, physicians, nursing attendants, patient unit clerks, escort, dietary and other health care employees. Provides for security of patients personal property, and handles valuables according to hospital procedure.
Runs errands to other departments, including but not limited to, the delivery of specimens and equipment. Assists in having patient ready for scheduled appointments including placing the patient on a stretcher or in a wheelchair.
Assists in keeping patient environment, patient equipment and patient care areas/units clean safe, and orderly.
Ensures that necessary equipment and supplies are present in the patient rooms and on the unit.
Runs errands as directed by nurse regarding patients needs or changes in condition. Required to complete assignments by end of shift. All incomplete tasks reported to nurse.
Transports patient to other areas of hospital when necessary.
Assists in postmortem care, transports deceased to morgue.
Provides continuous patient observation on a 1:1 basis as assigned by nurse.
Assists in maintenance of supplies and equipment.Cleans and returns all equipment to dirty utility room as soon as possible.
Collects specimens promptly and ensures timely delivery to laboratory. Performs pre and post operative patient care in a safe, proper manner, as assigned. Responds promptly to patient call light in positive manner.
Prepares patient examination areas as assigned. Assists in orientation of patient to a new environment. Assists with lifting and positioning of patients and equipment as directed by nurse.
Applies principles of infection control as outlined in infection control manual in performance of patient care.
Follows isolation techniques as outlined in policy and procedure manual. Interacts with patient and family, giving instructions and offering support.
Measures intake and output, records on appropriate form.Assists in admissions, discharges and transfers of patients. Follows established procedures.
Takes temperature, pulse, respirations and blood pressure; records in ICIS. Reports deviations from normal to the Registered Nurse.Weighs patient as assigned and records same.
Performs activities related to direct patient care under the supervision of RN. Assists patients with activities of daily living as necessary, (bathe/assists with baths, feedings, ambulation, etc).
To qualify you must have a High school graduate or equivalent, certification as a Patient Care Technician through the National Healthcare Association (NHA) required. Must have BLS + First Aid certification upon entry into the position. Working knowledge of English is evident in verbal, reading and writing abilities; other language an asset; demonstrated ability in computer skills; proficiency in venipuncture and phlebotomy required
Preferred Qualifications: Preferred Qualifications:Prior hospital experience, patient related care and graduate of a Nursing Attendant program preferred.
