We have an exciting opportunity to join our team as a H.I.M. Assistant in the Health Information Management Department. To qualify a High School Diploma or equivalent is required with one to two (1-2) years of experience in an area directly related to the position or equivalent combination of education and experience. Good verbal and written communication skills and computer skills are required. Knowledge of medical terminology with two (2) years of experience in Health Information Management preferred. Excellent communication and interpersonal skills required.
In this role, the successful candidate will be responsible for performing clerical work relating to the processing and maintenance of medical records. Ensures that health information is maintained in accordance with established NYU Medical Center policies and procedures, the Joint Commission standards, and regional, state and federal guidelines. Qualified candidates must be able to effectively communicate with all levels of the organization.
Performs other duties as assigned.
Answers telephone calls promptly and in a polite manner, identifying themselves and the department. Takes messages thoroughly and accurately. Transfers calls to the correct individual based on content of inquiry.
Performs quality review post scanning and indexing. Ensures that all pages were scanned successfully, and all scanned images are high quality and are assigned to the correct patient and account number.
Performs indexing. Ensures that scanned documents are indexed to the correct account number and document type.
Scans paper records on hospital units.
Performs scanning of paper records. Verifies the quality and accuracy of the scanned images. Insures that all pages are captured. Identifies any scanning errors and re-scans records as necessary.
Performs prepping of paper medical record documents. Checks each document for proper identification (patients name, medical record number and account number). Correctly identifies the portion of medical records to be scanned.
Ensures receipt of all records and documents in accordance with departmental policies. Accurately reconciles received records. Follows up in a timely manner for missing records..
Retrieves medical records from clinical areas. Delivers medical records to appropriate location. Transports medical records in a timely fashion. Safeguards medical records during transport to ensure confidentiality and integrity.
Maintains paper records and microfiche file areas. Files and retrieves medical records in accordance with departmental policies and procedures. Maintains all records in a well-organized manner, retrieves records from files as requested and in a timely manner. Obtains medical records from electronic system when applicable.
