The Johns Hopkins School of Nursing Simulation Center is a state-of-the-art nursing educational facility that incorporates simulated, realistic learning experiences into the instruction of nursing students and inter-professional teams (such as nursing students, medical students, and pharmacy students, as well as various health care professionals who are no longer students).
The main goal of the Simulation Center is to develop and improve the learner's clinical abilities in order to promote safe patient care. Current and future health care professionals practice in a simulated environment honing their skills, refining techniques, learning team work, and learning valuable communication and interpersonal skills required in patient care situations. Standardized portrayal of a common complaint/condition, for educational and/or assessment events and provide delivery of verbal and/or written feedback as required.
Specific Duties & Responsibilities:
Standardized portrayal of the emotional and physical aspects of real patients or patient family members, for the instruction and assessment of clinical learners. This may require the application of stage makeup, wigs, or non-invasive medical equipment. Allow learners to practice physical health assessment techniques related to the simulation. This may include some or all of the following examinations: Measurement of Vital Signs, Neurological, Abdominal, Head and Neck, Cardiovascular, Pulmonary, Musculoskeletal. Delivery of verbal and/or written feedback regarding this experience as a patient or family member receiving care.
High School Diploma or GED is required. Related work experience.
Experience as a standardized patient, a health professional, an instructor, or an actor preferred.
Additional Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:
Communicate articulately. Provide constructive feedback. Observe and remember learners' behavior for accurate feedback. Possess interpersonal skills for working with clinical learners. Must be able to portray real patients and replicate the experience for multiple learners. Must be comfortable with minimal exposure of his/her body and allowing others to professionally touch his/ her body (i.e. such as for listening to breath sounds, heart sounds, or abdominal sounds during physical exam). Complete checklists on paper or a computer.
Possible exposure to communicable diseases, with little likelihood of harm if established health precautions are followed. Must be able to sit or lie down for up to 30 minutes at a time.

During the Influenza ("the flu") season, as a condition of employment, The Johns Hopkins Institutions require all employees who provide ongoing services to patients or work in patient care or clinical care areas to have an annual influenza vaccination or possess an approved medical or religious exception. The pre-employment physical for positions in clinical areas, laboratories, working with research subjects, or involving community contact requires documentation of immune status against Rubella (German measles), Rubeola (Measles), Mumps, Varicella (chickenpox), Hepatitis B and documentation of having received the Tdap (Tetanus, diphtheria, pertussis) vaccination. This may include documentation of having two (2) MMR vaccines; two (2) Varicella vaccines; or antibody status to these diseases from laboratory testing. Blood tests for immunities to these diseases are ordinarily included in the pre-employment physical exam except for those employees who provide results of blood tests or immunization documentation from their own health care providers. Any vaccinations required for these diseases will be given at no cost in our Occupational Health office.
