This is a full time research engineer position in the McKay Orthopaedic Research Laboratory of the Department of Orthopaedic Surgery at the University of Pennsylvania. The research focus of the group is on stem cell mechanobiology and tissue engineering. Duties: The candidate will provide technical assistance to post-docs, graduate students, and research staff within the group. The candidate will be responsible for maintaining cell cultures and initiating and updating animal and human (IACUC and IRB) protocols. The candidate will assist in mechanical, biochemical, molecular and histological analysis of cells and engineered tissues derived from ongoing projects, with a focus on intervertebral disc tissue engineering projects. The candidate will also assist other lab members in the execution of projects involving small and large animal handling and surgery. The Research Specialist will carry out independent experiments under the supervision of the PI and other senior staff. These experiments will include production of biomaterials, production of engineered constructs, mechanical testing of constructs, histological analysis of constructs, and biochemical and molecular analysis of constructs for spine related research. Other duties will include maintenance of laboratory equipment (including computers), laboratory stock solutions, ordering supplies for the group, monitoring expenses, keeping an organized notebook, and training new staff in relevant procedures. Position is contingent on continued funding.
Qualifications: BS in an engineering (Biomedical, Chemical, Mechanical) or quantitative biological field of study and 0-1 year of experience, or equivalent combination of education and experience, are required. 1-3 years of experience preferred. The candidate must be self-motivated, reliable, responsible, and comfortable with quantitative and cell-based research methods. Previous experience in biomedical research is preferred. Good organization, communication, and writing skills are required. Computer literacy in Microsoft Word, Excel, and PowerPoint is required, and some familiarity with computer networking and troubleshooting is a plus. Machining and mechanical testing experience a significant plus. Additional programming experience (MATLAB, Labview) is also a plus. Some experience with website management is a requirement. Position is contingent upon funding.
