The MGH Foot & Ankle Research and Innovation Lab (FARIL) is a groundbreaking initiative by the MGH Orthopaedic Foot & Ankle (F&A) Service focused on pioneering breakthroughs in F&A research and innovation that will directly impact the care of F&A patients. With significant capital support already secured, the future Director will lead this robust, well-funded lab in an entrepreneurial research venture aspiring to change the face of F&A health, education, technology, and innovation nationwide—with the added benefit of being embedded within a leading, world-class academic institution. The Director will be responsible for all project management services required to conduct clinical trials and other investigational research in accordance with IRB, FDA, and industry regulations, as appropriate. Receiving general direction from the Chief of Foot & Ankle Surgery, the incumbent will provide oversight of all scientific activities and research personnel, including PhD candidates, medical students, residents, fellows, and other investigators (currently numbering 5-10); the successful candidate will also collaborate with the Chief and other department members to create and develop both a short and long term strategic plan for MGH FARIL. This individual will help implement key strategic initiatives within the Lab, including deployment of existing and future philanthropic support, intellectual property development, recruitment of cutting edge research scientists, and organization of educational initiatives such as internationally attended academic courses.
The incumbent will be expected to draw on a broad understanding of clinical and research practices, and display a high degree of initiative and independent judgment to continually assess and direct a wide range of issues, including research operations, talent recruitment, marketing, project development, national and international partnerships, and space management. In addition, the incumbent must have the skill set to collaborate closely with principal investigators, hospital leadership, philanthropic supporters, and other members of the interdisciplinary team to carry out the day-to-day operations of FARIL. The successful candidate should also have demonstrated experience in primary authorship of peer review publications, as well as substantial interest in oral and written presentation of research data on a local, regional, national, and international level. Ultimately, we intend to empower the successful candidate to become one of the world’s leaders in F&A research and innovation, both in the realm of academia and industry.
The incumbent will also be the primary compliance officer, responsible for obtaining regulatory approval at both the local and federal levels for the Division’s research endeavors. Additionally, he or she will act as the primary contact for research-related administrative needs and should have an express interest in academic advancement towards full professorship on the research track at Harvard Medical School. The successful candidate will be hired at the Assistant Professor level at Harvard Medical School, in the Department of Orthopaedic Surgery at Massachusetts General Hospital.
Ph.D. required in biomechanics or related Orthopaedic field. Substantive post-doctoral training and/or scientific contributions to the field required. Clear and effective communicator.
