The Johns Hopkins University of School of Medicine organizes its clinical practice via eighteen clinical departments representing the full array of medical specialties and subspecialties. The Department of Orthopaedic Surgery currently has 265 employees, including 35 full time clinical faculty, 11 research faculty, 20 assistants (fellows), 27 house staff (residents), 40 mid-level practitioners, and other full time staff supporting clinical and administrative needs. The Department is divided into nine clinical divisions (Foot/Ankle, Hand, Pediatric, Spine, Sports Medicine, Shoulder, Trauma, Oncology and Total Joints). In addition to patient care and education, the Department has a significant research program with funding from private and governmental sources. Our Department includes a local Access Center, Medical Office support, Billing Production, Finance, Marketing and HR. Patient care services provided by the Department span the continuum of care.
This position is responsible for the systems supporting the patient care experience within the control of the department. Physicians care for patients in multiple settings, including The John Hopkins Hospital, The Johns Hopkins Bayview Medical Center, Howard County General Hospital, Suburban Hospital and Sibley Memorial Hospital. Ambulatory services are currently provided in ten locations throughout Maryland and northern Virginia.
The Administrator reports to the Director and is responsible for the operations of a clinical, academic, and research department of Orthopaedic Surgery at The Johns Hopkins University School of Medicine.
Responsible for formulating the development and implementation of the Department's operational plan and will provide leadership to the department in defining the Department's immediate and long-term strategic plans.
Responsible for maintaining liaisons with all levels of administration within the School of Medicine, the affiliated hospitals, and ambulatory sites utilized by the Department's providers. Provides assistance, in the form of analysis, consultation, and planning, to the Clinical Director, and executive leadership.
Responsible for the non-faculty administrative staff for the Department's clinical, academic and research activities.
The general scope of responsibilities include: practice management, financial management/analysis, budgeting, grants, contract administration, compensation planning, personnel and management, recruiting, utilization and productivity management, marketing, and space management. Additionally, the administrator is responsible for the functions and staff for access services, credentialing and professional billing in collaboration with the Office of Physicians.
Responsible for the Department's and staff's satisfactory compliance with the rules and regulations of The Johns Hopkins University School of Medicine, and Clinical Practice Association. In addition, the administrator is responsible for assuring compliance with the Johns Hopkins Hospital and Health Systems regulations. The position requires an awareness of national health care and research trends/impacts, policies, and issues.
The Administrator plays key leadership roles in the following areas: Practice Management, Financial Management; Department Administration and Strategic Programmatic Planning Practice Management: Analyze practice results - volume statistics, billing data, expense and revenue trends. Compare results to industry benchmarks; implement changes to meet these standards as necessary. Develop strategic proposals for reallocation and development of ambulatory practice space. Develop and monitor strategies to maintain optimal number of operating rooms for the department's surgeons. Promote compliance and best billing practices to maximize revenues. Develop a more efficient, cost effective, patient centered ambulatory experience.
Integrates ambulatory operations with hospital operations into a patient centered delivery model. Utilizes patient satisfaction tools to develop action plans to improve patient satisfaction. Develops and manages a practice scorecard with metrics pertaining to quality, access, costs and outcomes.
Financial Management: Development and management of annual budgets, AllFunds, and P&Ls. Oversee grant management and submissions. Analysis of departmental fiscal operations to identify improvements. Support financial audit control processes and develop internal controls to maintain the integrity of the Department's financials. Administration: Represent the Department in all opportunities within the Johns Hopkins organization as well as within external organizations to promote the department's assets and strengths. Promote a culture of service excellence. Manage all human resources related activities within the Department. Develop staff; lead, motivate and direct a diverse workforce. Execute strategies involving service, quality, resources, people, efficiency, growth and reputation. Develop and implement policies needed to maintain compliance and meet best business practices. Manage space allocation. Involvement in all patient-related concerns. Works with the Epic Team to optimize systems for patient care and practice operations
Strategic Programmatic Planning: Collaborate with the Clinical Director to establish the strategic plan to include efficient operations, customer service and a culture of safety and improvement. Assessment of industry trends to identify growth opportunities in orthopaedic subspecialties. Marketing analyses to identify geographic growth/needs areas. Coordinate institution-wide initiatives to enhance patient services and the development of the MSK service line.
Bachelor's degree in related discipline.
Seven years progressively responsible professional-level administrative and financial experience related to monetary or non-monetary resources of a department, center, or unit, including two years of supervisory experience and two years financial management experience (e.g., planning, directing, monitoring, organizing, and controlling monetary and non-monetary resources.)
Senior management-level analytical, planning and leadership skills. Demonstrated success in developing and executing complex initiatives.
Knowledge of The Joint Commission standards.
Strong interpersonal skills and the ability to relate effectively with people at many organizational levels.
Ability to perform effectively in an academic environment; Practice management experience; Expertise in computer systems and data analysis; Ability to multi-task and prioritize; Ability to provide an environment that promotes creativity, transparency and energy.
Master's degree in related field may substitute for some of the required experience, to the extent permitted by the JHU Equivalency Formula.
JHU Equivalency Formula: 18 graduate degree credits may substitute for one year of experience. Additional related experience may substitute for required education on the same basis. For jobs where equivalency is permitted, up to two years of non-related college course work may be applied towards the total minimum education/experience required for the respective job.
